Social Security pays most people on a Wednesday set by birth date: the second Wednesday of the month if you were born on the 1st to the 10th, the third Wednesday if you were born on the 11th to the 20th, and the fourth Wednesday if you were born on the 21st to the 31st. People who started getting benefits before May 1997, or who also get SSI, are paid on the 3rd of the month, and SSI itself is paid on the 1st (SSA’s Social Security payment schedule 2027). A payment day that falls on a weekend or a federal holiday moves to the business day before, so some payments come early.

It depends on the birthday of the worker whose record you are paid on (20 CFR 404.1807):

Born on the 1st to the 10th: the second Wednesday of each month.
Born on the 11th to the 20th: the third Wednesday.
Born on the 21st to the 31st: the fourth Wednesday.
The 3rd of the month instead: on a record where someone started benefits from an application filed before May 1, 1997, and on a record where someone also gets SSI, lives outside the United States, or has their Medicare premium paid by their state.

Everyone paid on one record gets the same day. A husband or wife paid as a spouse gets the worker’s day, set by the worker’s birthday, not their own. SSA tells each person their payment day in writing, and once it is set it rarely changes, mainly when a record moves to the 3rd for one of the reasons above (404.1807(a) to (c)).

The January 2027 payment for people born on the 1st–10th comes on Wednesday, January 13, 2027. The list has every month of 2027.

Each leaf is one month’s payment for the group you pick; the list is the whole year. A day that falls on a weekend or a federal holiday is paid on the business day before, and the leaf says so. The Wednesday and SSI dates are SSA’s printed schedule’s; the 3rd-of-the-month dates are worked out with the same moving rule. Do a husband and wife get paid on the same day?

Only if they are paid on the same record, or if their birthdays fall in the same group. Each person’s own retirement benefit is paid on the day set by their own birthday, while a spousal benefit is paid on the worker’s day (20 CFR 404.1807(b)). Someone who gets their own benefit and later, with no break, a spousal top-up on the other record is paid both no later than their current payment day (404.1807(c)(5)). In 2027 the Wednesday payments run from January 13 to December 22. Here is every date in SSA’s schedule, by birthday; none of them moves for a holiday (SSA Publication 05-10031).

Born on the 1st to the 10th (second Wednesday): January 13, February 10, March 10, April 14, May 12, June 9, July 14, August 11, September 8, October 13, November 10 and December 8.
Born on the 11th to the 20th (third Wednesday): January 20, February 17, March 17, April 21, May 19, June 16, July 21, August 18, September 15, October 20, November 17 and December 15.
Born on the 21st to the 31st (fourth Wednesday): January 27, February 24, March 24, April 28, May 26, June 23, July 28, August 25, September 22, October 27, November 24 and December 22.

When is SSI paid in 2027?

On the 1st of each month, or the business day before when the 1st falls on a weekend or a holiday. That moves four payments into the month before (SSA’s schedule):

January 2027’s SSI: Thursday, December 31, 2026, because January 1 is New Year’s Day. It is the first SSI payment with the 3.6% increase (SSA).
May 2027’s SSI: Friday, April 30, because May 1 is a Saturday.
August 2027’s SSI: Friday, July 30, because August 1 is a Sunday.
January 2028’s SSI: Thursday, December 30, 2027, because New Year’s Day 2028 is a Saturday and the holiday is kept on Friday, December 31.

The other months are paid on the 1st: February 1, March 1, April 1, June 1, July 1, September 1, October 1, November 1 and December 1. So April, July and December 2027 each bring two SSI payments, and January, May and August none. The second payment in those months is next month’s, paid early, not an extra one.

When are 3rd-of-the-month payments in 2027?

On the 3rd, or on the last business day before it when the 3rd falls on a weekend or a holiday. SSA’s printed schedule marks the Wednesdays and the SSI days but not these, so we worked them out with the same moving rule (20 CFR 404.1807(c)(6)):

January: Thursday, December 31, 2026 (January 1 is a holiday, and the 2nd and 3rd fall on a weekend)
February 3 and March 3
April: Friday, April 2 (April 3 is a Saturday)
May 3 and June 3
July: Friday, July 2 (July 3 is a Saturday)
August 3 and September 3
October: Friday, October 1 (October 3 is a Sunday)
November 3 and December 3

If you get both Social Security and SSI, your SSI comes on the 1st and your Social Security on the 3rd. In October 2027 both land on Friday, October 1.

Is the disability payment schedule different?

No. Social Security disability benefits (SSDI) are paid on the same days, by the same birthday rule, because the payment-day rule covers every monthly Social Security benefit (20 CFR 404.1807). SSI paid because of a disability is SSI, so it comes on the 1st like any other SSI payment (SSA’s schedule).

Why do some payments come early?

The law moves them. When a payment day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday, the payment is made on the last day before it that is none of those (Social Security Act, section 708; 20 CFR 404.1807(c)(6)). A payment is never moved later for a weekend or a holiday.

In 2027 the payments that move are the ones on the 1st and the 3rd listed above. New Year’s Day moves two of them, January 2027’s and January 2028’s; weekends move the rest.

When does the first payment come after you claim?

In the month after your first month of benefits, on your payment day. Social Security pays each month’s benefit in the following month: SSA describes benefits payable for December as received in January (SSA’s COLA page).

For example, someone born on June 15, 1965 reaches 62 on June 14, 2027, the day before the birthday, so July 2027 is the first month they are 62 for the whole month (20 CFR 404.311). If they start at 62, July is their first month of benefits, and the payment for it comes on the third Wednesday of August: August 18, 2027. See claiming age for what starting at 62 costs.

When is the January 2027 payment, and does it include the increase?

January 13, 20 or 27 for the Wednesday groups, and Thursday, December 31, 2026 for SSI and for the 3rd-of-the-month group. The January Social Security payments are the first with the 3.6% cost-of-living increase announced on October 14, 2026; for SSI, the increase starts with the payment on December 31, 2026 (SSA). How much will 2027 payments be?

About 3.6% more than in 2026, from the January payments on (SSA). SSA estimates the average retired worker’s monthly benefit at $2,170 after the increase, up from $2,095 (SSA’s 2027 fact sheet). What reaches your bank can be less than your benefit. If your Medicare Part B premium is taken out of your benefit, it comes off before the payment is rounded down to the whole dollar (42 U.S.C. 415(g)), and any federal tax you asked to have withheld comes out too. What if your payment is late?

Wait three more mailing days, then contact Social Security; SSA’s schedule asks for that (SSA). Check the lists above first: a payment moved for a weekend or a holiday comes early, never late. This site cannot see or change payments, and it never asks for your Social Security number or bank details.

Questions people ask

When do I get my Social Security check?

On the second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month, by the birthday of the worker whose record you are paid on (1st to 10th, 11th to 20th, 21st to 31st), unless you are in the 3rd-of-the-month group (SSA). The calendar above shows every 2027 date.

Is Social Security paid on the third Wednesday of the month?

Only if the worker’s birthday is on the 11th to the 20th. In 2027 those dates run from January 20 to December 15 (SSA).

Why are there two SSI payments in April 2027?

May 1, 2027 is a Saturday, so May’s SSI is paid on Friday, April 30 (SSA). It is May’s payment, not an extra one, so no SSI comes in May.

Is Social Security paid early in December 2027?

The Wednesday payments are not: they come on December 8, 15 and 22. SSI for January 2028 comes early, on Thursday, December 30, 2027 (SSA).

When will I get my first Social Security check?

In the month after your first month of benefits, on your payment day. Start benefits for July 2027, for example, and the first payment comes in August 2027 (SSA describes benefits payable for one month as received in the next).
