About How Much Social Security Will I Get

An independent, free website that estimates Social Security benefits with SSA’s own published formula and figures, and explains the rules in plain English.

How Much Social Security Will I Get works out what Social Security will pay you each month, at every age you could start from 62 to 70, with the formula and figures the Social Security Administration (SSA) publishes. Type your date of birth and pay, or paste your own earnings record from my Social Security, and the departure board shows your estimate as you type. The guides explain the rules that decide the amount: full retirement age, spouses and survivors, the earnings limit, the yearly increase, payment days and taxes, with one page for each state.

How the answers are made

The calculators follow SSA’s published method step by step: earnings indexed by the national average wage index, the highest 35 years averaged into your average indexed monthly earnings, the benefit formula and its bend points, every cost-of-living increase, and the reductions and credits for the age you start. Our server and your browser run the same rules, and we test them against each other and against SSA’s own worked examples, which they reproduce to the cent. Every figure links to the government page it comes from. More on how the calculators work.

Independent

This is not a government website. It is not run by, endorsed by or connected with the Social Security Administration, the IRS or any other government agency. We sell nothing: no financial products, no advice, no help filing for benefits. Applying for Social Security is free, at ssa.gov or by phone with SSA; nobody needs to pay anyone to do it.

Who we are

How Much Social Security Will I Get is made, maintained and published by PVV Media Technologies, 102 N 2nd Avenue E, Newton, IA 50208, United States. It is free to use and carries no advertising: PVV Media Technologies pays for it and earns nothing from it. No bank, insurer, adviser or other company pays us or chooses what we publish.

The editorial team

The pages are written by the editorial team of PVV Media Technologies, from SSA’s published rules and figures and the other government pages each one links. They are edited by Piyush Choudhary, who has more than 12 years of experience in US benefits content, and reviewed by Ethan Wright, an enrolled agent who has advised clients on when to claim Social Security since 2011. Every calculator, guide and state page names the team, Piyush and Ethan under its title. Ethan is paid a flat fee per review and has no stake in when you claim.

What we ask you to remember

The answers are estimates from the published rules and what you type. Your real benefit depends on your full earnings record, which SSA holds; the estimate is closest when you paste that record into the board. Benefits also change with each year’s cost-of-living increase, and Medicare premiums and tax can be taken out of the check. Nothing on the site is legal, tax or financial advice.
